MGI 360 Ratings Oct 16 2013: MobileIron - Mobile Management Tools

We are initiating coverage of MobileIron with a 70 out of 100 rating and a POSITIVE outlook.

Opinion: The company, led by the original team of founders and executives, has created a robust platform for securing and managing corporate mobile environments and is ramping up its worldwide network of resellers and partners. Customer feedback is generally positive as company has managed through some mixed support issues in recent history. There is field evidence that MobileIron strategy of building out seats and add-on capability is getting traction. MobileIron offerings fit best into cases where customers need granular, on-premise control of mobile device security and applications with some amount of customization. We believe the company has addressed lingering concerns about high end scalability.

Out of 5,000 enterprise customers, majority use MobileIron on-premise, but a growing proportion is run in the cloud.

Market Outlook: We believe that in the market for Mobile Management Tools (MMT), MobileIron and AirWatch are the two companies that will lead the space. While the low end of the MDM market continues to commoditize, the opportunity to provide integrated, scalable mobile management capabilities to large and medium sized customers remains strong. As pace of change in mobile continues to remain high, many of the current participants of the highly fragmented low end of the Mobile Device Management market will lack the necessary R&D budget and will consolidate behind vendors that have critical mass in installed base, raised capital and channels. Field data suggests that in that higher end of the market customers are increasingly looking for integrated solutions that companies like MobileIron, Airwatch and a few others are able to deliver.

Market Definition: We have defined the Mobile Management Tools (MMT) market space as consisting of a set of requirements for managing mobile devices, mobile apps, mobile security, mobile content and monitoring. MMT combines:

  • MDM (Mobile Device Management),
  • MAM (Mobile Applications Management),
  • MCM (Mobile Content Management)
  • Mobile Device Monitoring and
  • Mobile Security
