Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM; MGI-X:1,302) has opened up its Cloud infrastructure and development platform to third parties. This note details how a UK-based healthcare IT applications company delivered a production-ready application and went live with customers in less than 12 months.

In an effort to analyze the relative strengths and limitations of this offering, MGI Research interviewed a healthcare IT applications software vendor that had recently built a new “in the cloud” application with Force.com.  The initial results are compelling.

Oasis Medical Solutions – The Sasio Experience of Building in the Cloud

Based in London, U.K., Oasis Medical Solutions, Ltd. is a midsize healthcare applications software company that recently built a new application using Salesforce.com’s Force.com platform.  The Oasis application - Sasio, is an excellent example of how a company can quickly develop an app and enter new markets rapidly by leveraging Force.com.  It also highlights the challenges facing Salesforce.com in moving beyond its core market of sales and support automation.  While Force.com will benefit from further maturity, for select applications it is a viable option today. Traditional applications and software development tools companies, such as Oracle, SAP, and Progress, should take notice.
