The MGI Research team brings together seasoned technology industry and Wall Street veterans with backgrounds in operations, research, and investment management from companies such as Gartner, Morgan Stanley, MasterCard, and Soundview Technology Group.
Analysts at MGI must have at least 15 years of relevant industry experience, and have held a senior level role at a recognizable industry player. MGI team members have direct, hands-on knowledge of the industries and companies they cover. MGI analysts maintain a peer-to-peer dialogue with clients, providing real-world, practical guidance shaped by years of experience.
Underpinning the research behind the MGI Index are inputs from major universities, business schools, the investment community, and a vast network of current and former corporate directors, CEOs and industry executives.
Our Team
Jim Mendelson is a Managing Director of MGI Research
Jim was a leading enterprise software analyst for more than 20 years on Wall Street. During that time he has covered a broad range of software companies in a variety of different information technology sectors. Jim was with Morgan Stanley from 1978 to 1993, initially covering emerging growth companies. Later he picked up coverage of the software industry in 1983.
Jim joined SoundView Technology Group as a partner in 1993 and left in 2004, following the firm’s sale by Charles Schwab, followed by a brief stint at Lazard Capital Markets. During his time on Wall Street, Jim was a highly ranked analyst by Institutional Investor, as well as by the Reuters and Greenwich Research polls. In addition to writing numerous reports, he has hosted a wide range of different investor oriented events from conferences, to bus tours, conference calls, as well as “Q&A” discussions on various topics. Jim has been a speaker at Gartner Group Conferences, as well as a number of “kick-off” meetings for software sales groups. Based on his experience and expertise, Jim has appeared on a number of occasions on CNBC and Bloomberg TV and radio. As part of his tenure on Wall Street, Jim has participated in numerous equity offerings as a lead or co-manager, including initial public offerings, follow-on offerings, private equity offerings and mergers and acquisitions. Jim has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and English from Bucknell University, and an MBA in Finance from New York University.
Igor Stenmark is a Managing Director of MGI Research
Mr. Stenmark’s background encompasses over 20 years in entrepreneurial, strategic, investment and executive roles in the technology industry. Since 2001, Mr. Stenmark has acted as a strategist and counsel advising technology industry investors and executives. His clients have included venture capital and private equity firms, family offices and independent investment research organizations. During 2001 and 2002 Mr. Stenmark served as a board member and advisor to technology start-ups such as Interbind (web services - sold to Per-Se Technologies), Mindfabric (Internet natural language patents), NeXtorage (next generation programmable communications switches), Radar Software (semantic web – funded by DARPA), Vista Research (independent investment research - sold to S&P). Mr. Stenmark has also provided strategic consulting to IBM, Warburg-Pincus, Credit Suisse/Sprout, Cyclone Commerce and BMC Software among others. Mr. Stenmark founded Stenmark Capital and launched an arbitrage-focused hedge fund in 2003. Previously, he was Group Vice-President of Gartner’s Enterprise Systems Research Group, Mr. Stenmark had P&L responsibility for research and advisory business with over $70 million in revenues. Under his leadership, the Enterprise Systems Research Group grew to over sixty five senior analysts covering network and systems management, information security, databases, application integration, enterprise servers, storage and software asset management. The group consistently exceeded its business goals, developed new analyst talent, innovated with groundbreaking research and introduced new product offerings. Mr. Stenmark led the development of new research coverage and industry conferences in security, application integration & middleware, and asset management. During his nine-year tenure at Gartner, Mr. Stenmark authored numerous research articles and industry scenarios, including a number of in-depth reports on software vendors such as Computer Associates as well as seminal research on the theory and practice of mergers and acquisitions in the technology arena. He is the recipient of several research awards as is the research group he managed. While at Gartner, Mr. Stenmark advised numerous technology companies on strategic alternatives including those of business combinations, spin-offs and re-capitalization. Prior to Gartner, Mr. Stenmark was the co-founder of Spectrum Concepts Software and led the development of its XCOM 6.2 communications software product. Between 1987 and 1992, Mr. Stenmark served as principal developer, head of R&D and head of international sales and business development. In 1992 the company was sold to Legent Corporation for about $60 Million. Following the acquisition by Legent, Mr. Stenmark served as an advisor on strategy and M&A to Legent’s Vice-Chairman. Previously, Mr. Stenmark consulted to Mobil Corp. Mr. Stenmark holds Bachelor degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Cooper Union School of Engineering and New York University respectively.
Andrew Dailey is a Managing Director of MGI Research.
Mr. Dailey has over sixteen years of diversified technology and financial services experience. Previous to MGI Research, he was a partner at Stenmark Capital Management, an investment advisory firm. Prior to SCM, Dailey was a partner at the Jetstream Group, a management consulting firm advising Fortune 500 CIOs on software procurement negotiations, enterprise applications strategies and outsourcing/offshoring strategies. In this role, Mr. Dailey advised clients such as British Petroleum, Applied Materials, JPMorganChase, McDonald’s, McKesson, Nissan, Sun Microsystems, and Tetra Pak. His report on BPO, call centers and outsourcing was featured in cover stories by BusinessWeek and Time magazine. Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Marketing for Baan Company, a Nasdaq and Amsterdam Exchange-listed ERP software company. He was responsible for product marketing, events, and managed five global industry solution centers. Mr. Dailey spent eight years at Gartner Group, where he co-founded the Software Asset Management practice, and launched the ERP and supply chain management advisory businesses in Europe. Mr. Dailey is the author of numerous industry research papers and has lectured at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, and The Charles University, Prague. A four-time NCAA All-American in tennis, Mr. Dailey holds a BA degree from Swarthmore College.
